painterly bay... my backyard

The mudflats.  Oil on hardboard.  18 x 12". 2012

same location, different day....

The challenge this week over at The Artist Playroom was "In your own backyard"...  although not technically right in my backyard - this is pretty close!  We love to take the dogs for a walk along the bay.  This location is only a 5 - 10 min walk from home, and you can walk right around the bay.  At high tide there are small boats bobbing on the water, and you often see the ferry's going across to the islands.  At low tide there are the long stretches of mud flats, which are just as appealing to me - interesting patterns, and glimmers of light.

Not as much fun to walk on - especially with small, white, fluffy pooches! (we only did that ONCE!)

I painted this oil yesterday,  using a palette knife - my first use of a palette knife for a whole painting.  The oil is on pretty thick, and it was colder and rainy yesterday morning, so it's still very wet!    Will be interesting to see how long it takes to dry, as I didn't use any mediums - just straight paint.

On a different note I loved all the comments and feedback to my sketches last friday 'Sketching and Painting" , really made my weekend!

AND of course ( it just occurred to me!) this is soo Paint Party Friday - happy PPF!

  2. Thats a lovely painting and place, and I think this distance counts for being in your back yard : ) I was looking through your poasts, it was fun to see your work space and I have to ask about the Gumnuts... What kind of tree do they come from? I also love to collect different nuts and seed pods (and drift wood, sticks, moss to name a few).

Thank you for stopping by my blog, always nice to see what other write and then go back to visit their blogs, glad to find yours.

    1. The gumnuts come off a Eucalyptus tree. I'm not sure yet what kind, as I havn't seen the flowers yet. They are large trees that are common in Australia, and there are many species/ varieties. There are a number growing in the local park we walk by often - and I collected those in the picture only a few weeks ago. Like you I also collect seed pods etc, drift wood, and shells, interesting rocks, feathers...you name it!

    1. Hi Jenn - thanks! I'm so glad you like my painting :-) I am sure acrylics will be fun for you mom to start painting - and they have the benefit of drying so much faster!

  5. This is freaky, it looks like the view I have from home or at least just around the corner. That wouldn't be Moreton Bay looking across to Straddie would it? When I saw your painting I instantly thought it looked familiar and the photo makes it seem more familiar. Wouldn't it be funny if we were neighbours. Your painting is fabulous, love the reflection on the water.

  6. Hi Von! It sure is! This is a view from Thompsons Beach, Victoria point, looking across to Stradbroke island / MAcleay island. Depending on where you are we could be neighbours :-) Thanks for your kind comments too!

  7. oh this is scrumptious!!! I think Gracie would love a romp in mud. she surely enJOYed it in Sedona when Dry Creek got rained on generously turning it to a sweet swimming hole. she loved rolling and splashing and I enJOYed her JOY so much that we went back several days until, oh boo-hoo, no more wet, mud, or anything, just DRY Dry Creek again...

  8. that is hilarious! We would love to let the dogs swim,, but roll in the mud? when they are pure white, semi-long haired dogs? I couldn't face it! But I am sure they would love it!! I have a photo somewhere of my little Bella, when only around 6 months old, after she had been digging in the garden...if I can find it I'll post it up - cause she is the funniest sight! lol :-P

    1. Thanks Tracey - I have a number planned for a series on this locale, in a similar style. I wonder if all tidal mud flats are similar? This is a view from Victoria Point, BRisbane, Australia - in case anyone was interested!

  12. What a beautiful painting...wow...you must have some wonderful walks!
I've got a white small pooch that is very low to the ground, but I'd still want to take time to walk in this lovely location.
I'll look forward to seeing more ;D
